Career Profile
Dr Matalanis graduated MBBS from Melbourne University in 1980 following which he completed his Masters of Surgery degree. He is a Cardiothoracic and Vascular surgeon and holds the position of Associate Director of Cardiac Surgery at the Austin Medical Centre, one of Melbourne’s leading teaching hospitals. His training includes full Australian Board certification in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, as well as a Cardiovascular fellowship with Drs. Stanley Crawford, Joe Coselli and Hazim Safi at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, USA – an acknowledged centre of excellence in Cardiothoracic surgery.

Dr Matalanis has had over 20 year experience in the whole range of Cardiac surgery. His areas of special interest include repair of Thoracic Aortic Diseases, aortic and mitral valve repair, and valve-preservation procedures such as the Ross and David procedures. He has one of the busiest, if not the largest, referral practices in Australia in the treatment of Thoracic Aortic Pathology including aneurysms and dissections.

Areas of Interest
In particular he specialises in the repair of:

  • Aneurysms and dissections of the aortic root (with native valve preservation – David procedure),
  • Aortic arch including reconstruction of the carotid and brachiocephlic vessels and elephant trunk procedure,
  • and thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair with re-implantation of intercostals arteries.

He also has a large practice in aortic stent grafting for both aneurysms and dissections and use antegrade cerebral perfusion, CSF drainage and cerebral monitoring.

Dr Matalanis currently performs close to 100 of these complex cases per year, and obtains excellent post-operative results.

He is a member of various Australian, American and International Cardiothoracic Societies and currently is the Treasurer of the Australasian Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons. He practices at many large public and private hospitals in Melbourne, including Epworth Hospital and the Warringal Hospital.

Academic and Research Interests
Dr Matalanis has published extensively in national and international journals, especially in his chosen fields of Aortic and Aneurysmal surgery. He has written several book chapters and is asked to travel widely to present at numerous scientific meetings throughout the region.
